When purchasing new clematis the adjoining tag usually will describe the clematis as a ABC or 123. I discovered that this had to do with the type of pruning required. I found the pruning information on the "Home of Clematis" website. I found it very informative. However, when joining ACS, I noticed the clematis type is not described the same way. When 1st learning about the difference in pruning types I discovered that I most prefer type C or 3 because they grow on new growth as opposed to old wood. How can I decide which clematis will fit the C or 3 profile from the ACS website?
Hello Edith,
I was asked by a friend if she should throw in the towel on a Henryi clematis that was damaged (she thinks) by Roundup 2 years ago. It was very prolific prior to spraying for grasses that had encroached the area around the base of the plant. Since then, it has not done much at all and she wonders if she should just dig it up and replace it.
Thanks,

Hi Edith,
I have 2 clematis' planted on the same arbor that have very different growth habits, but both have purple blooms of a very similar color and style - 'Polish Spirit' and 'Maria Louise Jensen' - One grows to about 5 feet, bushy and has smaller (not tiny) leaves. The other has larger leaves and the sky's the limit to height. My arbor is at least 10 feet, and I think it would go higher if allowed. Could you tell me which is which? Every year, I switch the tags because I think I figure it out, until I see something somewhere that makes me think differently.
Thanks,
Cindy Vadakin

It is being sold by one of ACS sponsors but I do not see it listed in Clematis A-Z. Is it known by another name?
